HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR PIANO POSTURE
Creating good habits from the beginning is crucial to long term success when playing the piano.
In this blog we’ll go through the difference between the correct versus the incorrect posture when playing the piano.
Sitting on the edge of the seat. This will allow you to reach the pedals if necessary and sit at a comfortable distance which also benefits your overall posture.
Almost forming a right-angle with your arm. This is a checkpoint for your hands and shoulders. If this angle is formed you will be able to form the most accurate hand position.
Feet flat on the floor (or on the pedals if you will be using them).
Back straight – good posture technique which will avoid injury.
Shoulders and arm fairly relaxed – keeping our shoulders down ensures we are not feeling or looking to sluggish and ensures our hands are in the correct place ready to play.
Sitting too close will not provide you enough room to reach the keys comfortably.
Arching your back can cause back pain which could lead to injury.
Stiff shoulders and arms can cause you to produce less noise when pressing the keys as you will struggle to press the keys with a variation of forces. This will mean that the music you are playing will have less expression, which can cause a loss during a competition or exam.
